The Tongue December 2011
|
|
The Tongue has distinguished himself as an MC Battle champion, seasoned touring artist opening for the likes of Public Enemy, Dizzie Rascal, The Herd and a prolific songwriter, with two albums “Shock And Awe” and “Alternative Energy”; three mix tapes and an EP “Bad Education” to his name.
Building on his success in 2011, supporting Drapht on his national “Life Of Reily” tour, playing the Come Together Festival, his own headline tour, The Tongue now delivers The Sextape and its lead single “Two Girlfriends”.
The Sextape covers issues that are largely taboo in hip hop (pregnancy, STDs, homophobia, polygamy) with style and expert lyricism. It's a mix tape that plays like an album with special guests including Australian hip-hop legend Bias B, Toe-Fu (The Herd), DJ Skoob and Nick Lupi (Spit Sydicate).

The Jezabels
|
|
Having spent a good deal of 2011 touring overseas in the UK, USA, Europe, Canada & Singapore, The Jezabels return to stages here at home in October to launch their debut LP Prisoner.
Powerful, poetic, bold and pure, Prisoner is the first full-length release from the Sydney based quartet. A stunning collection of songs that showcase maturity in song writing, well beyond their young years. Recorded mostly in The Attic Studio in Sydney, the band have continued their relationship with long time producer Lachlan Mitchell, the man behind their first three EPs. The album has been mixed by Peter Katis (Jonsi, The National, Interpol) at Tarquin Studio, Connecticut and Mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound, New York.
The first single from the album Endless Summer, has been added to Triple J and indie radio across the country in the first week of service.
“Increasingly adept at flooding our ears with thundering emotions. Almost operating outside trend, their music more simply exists than chases our approval. They are here to stay.”
- Clash Magazine UK
“The Jezabels are the Aussie band creating the biggest stir at the South By Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas. The Sydney four-piece arrived at the annual industry bash this week as part of Australia's biggest delegation of talent ever sent - and with a reputation on the rise.” - AAP

Dirt Farmer August 2011
|
|
Roll up your swag. Dust off your denim. Burn your banjos and start a rock and roll band. That’s what Dirt Farmer have done.
Hailing from Albury-Wodonga, the five-piece band have relocated to Melbourne. Formed in April 2010, brothers Stuart and Thomas Barlow, with friends Chris Wright, Nic Duplex and Patch Oram, met in high school and united over musical tastes.
'Johnny Marble' is the first single off 'Gladstone Street Circus', their forthcoming EP; recorded and mixed with Leadbetter Productions (Sarah Blasko, Whitley) and mastered by Exchange Mastering UK.
Combining gritty yet crispy guitars, sharp drum grooves, smooth bass lines complemented with hand claps and harmonies, Dirt Farmer have been described as “The Velvet Underground on less smack and more sunshine”, with hints of The Rolling Stones, The Band, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Front man Stuart is no stranger to the stage. He is well-toured, both nationally and internationally, having spent the last two years in folk darling Lisa Mitchell’s band, enjoying stints at several festivals, including Big Day Out and Falls Festival.

Bon Chat, Bon Rat June 2011
|
![]() |
Bon Chat, Bon Rat is Alex Murray, Reece Cooper and Russell Smith, whose connection sparked a likeminded desire for innovative electronic music. The trio self-produced and mixed their debut EP, which encompasses elements of IDM and experimental pop music. With synthesisers and vocals that layer and clutter, chanting guitar loops and frantic rhythms, Bon Chat, Bon Rat is as much chaotic and claustrophobic as it is inspiring. By warping conventional song structures and drawing on innovative instrument use, the result is a bold, mesmerising experience.
This is music made as art. The tracks feel both organic and hollow, with a continuous theme of machine vs. instrument constantly evolving the tracks over multiple listens. Awesome.
- FRUITZ & BEATZ [fruitbeats.blogspot.com]
Their songs are the product of actual thought; their arrangements use the aforementioned instruments, but they’re deployed in a dynamic way that rewards attention to detail. Their tracks never slow down to pat themselves on the back, and the disparate elements create tension, never translating as awkwardly sandwiched together.
- Matt Hickey [WhoTheHell?/The Vine]
It’s an individualistic sound, which in a way can’t be explained easily. I suppose there is an element of paradox within the music of Bon Chat, Bon Rat, in that it combines the percussive sound of xylophones with sounds of the future emanating from synths and computers.

Only The Sea Slugs May 2011
|
![]() |
Sydney rockers Only The Sea Slugs are proud to unveil their new single ‘Big Sky’, the first track to be lifted from their forthcoming mini album ‘Street Music’, due out later this year.
A rollicking, haphazardly timed narrative germinating from a simple guitar line, ‘Big Sky’ speaks of the bizarre loneliness of living in a big city. As singer / guitarist Sasha puts it, it’s “basically a tune about chasing your tail in a large city, and letting go of useless s**t.”
‘Big Sky’ and the upcoming ‘Street Music’ marks the first official release from Only The Sea Slugs since their debut EP ‘Dreamstate’ was released in 2009. Heralded for their brooding, enchanting sound and their absorbing live presence, ‘Dreamstate’ followed a highly-prized collection of demos and singles that saw the band garner themselves a bit of a “Band to Watch” status in and around Sydney and indeed, nationally. Their 2007 recording ‘You’re The Reason Drugs Are Useless’, plus their 2008 track ‘We, The Odd One’ picked up strong play everywhere Triple J and FBi through to College Radio in the US, France, Italy and the UK.
In 2008 ‘You’re The Reason Drugs Are Useless’ also caught the attention of Chupa Chups, who along with Myspace, Street Press Australia and a host of other industry supporters, picked OTSS as the winner of their STICK OUT competition. The band beat over one thousand other entrants nationally to be crowned the winner, picking up $100 000 worth of prizes, including the opportunity to record their debut EP ‘Dreamstate’.
But now, the attention turns to brand new single ‘Big Sky’ and the forthcoming ‘Street Music’.
“‘Dreamstate’ is a gorgeously melodic, whirligig of a song. The B-sides, Colour Me In & Mirrors, take off in a slightly more upbeat direction that is curiously dancey in the least horrible way possible and all three come together to form a very impressive EP.”

We Say Bamboulee April 2011
|
![]() |
Following in the footsteps of his older brother Alister Wright (Cloud Control), Doug Wright formed We Say Bamboulée in 2008 with brothers Peter and Russell Fitzgibbon to make their live debut, taking out 2nd place in the Sydney University Band Competition.
They’ve since shared the stage with many great Australian bands including
Philadelphia Grand Jury, The John Steel Singers, Art Vs Science, Richard in Your Mind,
Cassette Kids and Dukes of Windsor as well as appearing at last year’s Parklife and Peat’s Ridge festivals.
After two years spent accumulating the ultimate collection of obscure vintage
keyboards, skateboarding, tie dyeing t-shirts, and hiking in their picturesque blue
mountains backyard, the trio decided to drop the distractions, and recruited Richard In
Your Mind's Jordy Lane (aka Shady Lane) to help put the finishing touches on their
debut EP.
The end result is ‘Bush Tricks’, 8 tracks of quirky electro pop from a place somewhere
between Yeasayer and The Postal Service, an impressive first release which is sure to
make even the most cynical scenester's head turn.
“I say BAM-BA-LANG!! This song makes me move, happy and light headed all in one! Solid Gold it is!!”

San Cisco March 2011
|
![]() |
San Cisco is a young four-piece from Fremantle in sunny Western Australia. On the weekends they love to go skateboarding and play Nintendo 64 in between creating an eclectic mix of indie pop with folk undertones, slashes of synth and influences ranging from Bright Eyes to Vampire Weekend. Scarlett bangs the drums, Nick plays the electric bass, while Jordi & Josh play the guitars, write the songs and sing them.
San Cisco have spent the last year graduating high school, performing at some festivals and playing round town pretty much every weekend. Golden Revolver is San Cisco’s first single off their forthcoming EP release of the same name, recorded at Blackbird Studios, Perth by producers Matthew Chequer (Little Birdy) & Steven Schram (Little Red, Cat Empire, Little Birdy). Confident with stage presence & strong with vocals San Cisco continue to impress with their brand of upbeat summer pop.
Although still young (Jordi 17, Josh 18) San Cisco’s principal songwriters have been penning great tunes for the last few years. In the previous incarnation as King George, the band have received many accolades, awards and played many festivals and headliner shows.
San Cisco performed at this years One Movement For Music festival which lead to an invitation to appear at the 2011 Great Escape Music Festival in the UK. They also received their first airplay on London’s influential taste making station, XFM.
San Cisco have just played this years Perth’s Big Day Out, St Jeromes Laneway Festival and Adelaide’s FUSE Festival, and their single Golden Revolver has found a good home on Triple J.
The future looks “golden” for San Cisco.

Ghoul February 2011
|
![]() |
Bursting onto the scene in 2008, Ghoul made an immediate impact with their mini-album, ‘A Mouthful Of Gold’, which they distributed freely at their shows and on MySpace. The free release earned the band widespread adulation, with Mess+Noise praising singer Vizintin’s “Antony-esque croon”, Polaroids Of Androids describing it as “the musical equivalent of Frank Sinatra discovering beautifully sloppy high school punk rock”, and RoseQuartz comparing its sound to “the weirder moments of Radiohead's Kid A”.
Soon enough the band were sharing stages with the crème of Australia’s experimental underground, including PVT, Seekae and Pikelet. PVT’s own Laurence Pike openly professes to being one of the band’s biggest fans: “Their music can be abstract, atmospheric, intensely rhythmic and at times defies conventional structures, yet it’s fiercely melodic, inventive and accessible, maintaining a focus worthy of repeated listening.”
After it premiered on the influential Rose Quartz blog in early November, teaser track “3Mark” was posted to a whopping 34 blogs worldwide in just one day, including UK’s The Guardian and US blog ‘I Guess I’m Floating’. Vocalist Ivan Vizintin describes the influences behind 3Mark:
“We were listening to a lot of dubstep tunes and fiddling around in Ableton, trying to emulate drum patterns that we had been hearing,” explains Vizintin. “The song took a huge left turn when we introduced the synth; everything just fell into place after that.”
In Australia, their names have been mentioned everywhere from Pedestrian to Who The Hell, and 3Mark is also making waves at radio, with Triple J’s Zan Rowe naming it her Catch Of The Day and Sydney’s FBI instantly adding it to rotation.
Fresh from performing at Field Day 2011, Sydney experimental four-piece Ghoul have announced they will release an all-new mini-album ‘Dunks’, on 4th of February 2011 on Speak N Spell Records (Dappled Cities, Bear In Heaven) through Inertia. The release will act as a precursor to the band’s debut full-length, which is due 2nd quarter 2011.

Sticky Fingers January 2011
|
![]() |
"Sticky fingers...magically combine whimsical English folk, West Coast psychedelia, and classic dub - and make it work…seductive."
The four piece Newtown misfits are misspending their youth while we watch. And it's as colourful as the review suggests: a melodic, mega-hectic, mash of psychedelic, pop and roots that’ll have you throwing shapes around rooms with people you barely know.
The band began their rise when drummer, Beaker and bass player Paddy Fingers, met busker Dylan Frost one night in early 09 outside the Coopers Arms hotel in Newtown. Dylan, fresh from N.Z. was on the streets with his guitar busking for coin outside the pub. “We met him,” Patty says, “when the Coopers Arms bouncer started hassling us and telling us we should give him some money.” Frost’s melodic sense brings the Kiwi spirit and melodic lineage to the band.
Frost, the youngest member of the band (the rest of the band are 20), has 19 years of life and a hundred years of heartbreak in his voice. The band surround Frost’s vocals in textural and psyche-y, atmospheric melodies punched out by the Sticky Fingers' rhythm section’s blunt sound scapes.
If you like your tropical, jangly, folky, dubby, rocky kind of stuff, then Sticky Fingers fit the bill. They actually fit the solid songwriters bill pretty nicely too. They’ve also sold out gigs at The Annandale and at the Oxford Arts Factory in Sydney… these lads must be doing something right.
"Sticky Fingers betray an obvious love for dub and a healthy dose of experimentation is just as prevalent. Particularly noteworthy is the lead guitar (one solo in Willow Tree suggests many hours trying to master Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb), which lifts the Fingers …to something much more. More expansive songs such as Juicy Ones and Hell & Back proof that dub kids go through their Zeppelin phase too. This is promising stuff." - Metro, SMH (Nov 2010)

Kimbra December 2010 |
![]() |
Close your eyes and listen. Really listen. You’ll hear smoky soul, flights of dazzling invention, and intricate layers of deeply felt emotion. Then you’ll start to ask yourself some questions. What forces shaped that extraordinary voice? And how does a 20 year old from New Zealand’s North Island get to be this good?
As a teen growing up in Hamilton, Kimbra’s gifts were recognised early on. Already gigging solo, she twice won grants from NZ On Air – one of which resulted in a recording session with Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers) and went on to receive high rotation on radio and television. Kimbra soon relocated to Melbourne to cultivate her musical profile (and a growing and restless creative ambition), and under the wing of Forum 5 management, paired up with producer Francois Tetaz (Bertie Blackman, Gotye) to begin work on her debut album.
As those who’ve seen her live will attest, Kimbra’s poetic vocals are backed up by a strong performance ethic. She’ll often cut, sample and loop her voice via her trusty loop pedal for accompaniment – and that ability to take risks translates into a rare creative abandon in the studio too.
Alongside working with Tetaz, Kimbra also took a sojourn to L.A. to write and record with alternative act As Tall As Lions in order to get new inspiration for her long-gestating debut. On the evidence of the album’s stand out tracks, it pays off. Replete with a suitably flashy, glittering vibe without being superficial, Two-Way Street plays with the metaphor of the boulevard and about how two people must meet in the middle to make love last. Cue starry-eyed keyboards and organic sounds aplenty. A recurring characteristic to her music, forthcoming single Settle Down even samples a tampon packet for its percussion track.
Back in the studio, Kimbra brought local hip-hop maestro M-Phazes on board for the final mixes. Blending styles and moods with confidence, she brings something new and unexpected to the singer-songwriter landscape.
There’s something of the ‘old soul’ in this young artist. Songs about the lure of domestic bliss, dealing with an old flame – these are a million miles from wide eyed teen pop or glib r’n’b swagger. Make no mistake – Kimbra is picking up steam even as she arrives. It’s going to be a wonderful trip…
"Kimbra could easily make the leap from underground chanteuse to mainstream pop starlet" Dom Alessio (Triple J), The Music Network Magazine - August 2010

The Checks November 2010 |
![]() |
When THE CHECKS relocated back to New Zealand in 2008 after living in London for 18 months, they had the killer Ian Broudie-produced debut album Hunting Whales ("a rock’n'roll album right on target for the now" - The Fly; "a rough diamond of a debut" - Mojo; 7/10 - NME), four 7" singles, and a whole spectrum of touring experiences under their collective belts.
Touring Japan with The Hives, hitting the road with Muse, pressured by Oasis to be their opening act, and being introduced on stage every night of an REM tour by uber-fan Michael Stipe: all this stuff is hard to beat when your group is the one you formed with your 15-year-old pals from school less than five years earlier.
For THE CHECKS, who had bagged a 2005 New Zealand Music Award after releasing just one single, there was never any question of sitting around reflecting on these heady days of teenage glory. Their restless creative energy -- fuelled equally by vintage R&B, indie rock classicism, and the wild side of 21st century acts -- was channeled into self- recording and self-producing the raucous intensity of second album, Alice By The Moon, and undertaking two sold out tours of New Zealand.
Somewhat unusually, THE CHECKS were brought up hearing the blues; but the musical past for The Checks is as much 2003 as 1963: it’s the crushing grooves of The White Stripes over those of Led Zeppelin, and the spirit and sound is closer to Kings Of Leon than BB King. What THE CHECKS are about is capturing the heavy soul which has always made rock'n'roll music great: the kind of unrestrained rhythm'n'blues-singed fire of love which has infected groups from the Gun Club to the Black Lips.
Still only in their early 20s and already veteran performers and recording artists, THE CHECKS have played their way into becoming one of New Zealand’s most adrenalised, vital and consistently thrilling live acts. To paraphrase the Minutemen: do you want nu rave, or do you want the truth?

Old Man River October 2010 |
![]() |
You’d know Ohad Rein, aka Old Man River, best from his 2006 smash hit Sunshine, which won an APRA Award for Blues and Roots Work of the Year. The track was taken from his 2007 debut, Good Morning, after which you might have expected him to record a quick follow-up and capitalise on his growing popularity.
Instead, the enigmatic Sydneysider has been globetrotting - to countries like Italy, Japan and Korea, where Good Morning has been a chart-topping success; and to Israel and India, where he found the inspiration to write an album’s-worth of new material.
Now, Old Man River is finally set to return to the spotlight with Trust – an album that builds on the foundation of Good Morning yet rises to epic new heights for the songwriter.
Trust is a glorious collection of pop music, infused with global sounds and held together by ambitious, far-reaching production. The sunny exposition and lyrical honesty that defined OMR’s debut are still present, but it’s the newfound sense of worldliness and maturity that makes these songs resonate with a more astute audience.
A cornucopia of musicians from all corners of the globe contributed to the record’s full-bodied sound, and the international flavour on the album continues into the behind the scenes talent, including producers Wayne Connolly (You Am I, Youth Group, Sarah Blasko), Ori Avni from Israel, and legendary Indian record-maker Daman Sood (Jagjit Singh, Abida Parveen).
2010 is shaping up to be the year that Old Man River reach a new level of connectedness, and deliver something altogether unique. This time, Rein is ready for mainstream success.

Skybombers September 2010 |
![]() |
Kids sure grow up fast these days. Take Skybombers: four Aussie lads who had a high-rotation hit - "It Goes Off" - on Indie 103 in Los Angeles, then tore the roof off the Roxy on Sunset, all before they were old enough to buy a drink at the bar.
Skybombers are all over 21 now. But really, they're forever as old as every teenager who ever picked up an electric guitar: the Beatles and Stones, the Easybeats and AC/DC, Oasis and You Am I, the Libertines and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Those bands are woven through Skybombers’ sound like links in a chain.
The live experience prompted a musical fine-tuning that evolved in to the upbeat and riotous energy of rock's primary sources (see above). The band then recorded their first slap-dash demo and eagerly looked for more shows to play.
From there, five killer songs became Skybombers' gloriously raucous debut EP, “Sirens”. It was originally intended for their mates and anyone who came to a show, until it fell into the hands of Albert Productions, Australia's premier rock'n'roll label, home to the Easybeats and AC/DC.
It has been a whirlwind three years for the band since their debut EP hit the airwaves here and overseas. Now, the Melbourne lads are set to release the first single from their forthcoming sophomore album. The tune “Love Me Like You Used To Do” showcases the band’s talent for killer hooks with their signature guitar rock stylings.
Chances are you've heard something like it some other time, felt the thunder in your chest, the simple thrill of the perfect hook in your heart and the blood singing in your ears. The crucial difference is that this time it belongs to Skybombers. And they've got it by the throat.

Parades September 2010 |
![]() |
Parades are a young art rock band from Sydney who wisely choose to create their own music with no outside input or interference. Featuring Dan Cunningham, Tim Jenkins, Michael Scarpin and Jonathan Boulet – Parades’ debut album Foreign Tapes is out now via Dot Dash Recordings.
The album is expansive and ambitious; a haze of pop harmonies, post rock guitars and electronic meanderings. Drum Media did a great job describing the band when they said: “Parades create their homely tunes in a garage in Sydney’s Northwest, but it might as well be Iceland or the moon. They have an ethereal, expansive sound that is sweet and understated.”
Since their inception, Parades have pulled the main support for Malcolm Middleton in just their third show, Jebediah in their eighth and an NYE slot on the annual Peats Ridge Festival. Since their first show in April '08 they've been given heady comparisons to Explosions in the Sky, Radiohead, Fugazi, The Postal Service and Sigur Ros.
Even without saying it themselves, it is clear that this is a group of young individuals aching to be considered alongside exceptional bands rather than indie or new wave revivalist ones. Someone once said, that if a band is not playing at the edge of their abilities at all times, they should be playing something else...Or something to that effect.
"These guys are fantastic. Simple as that."

Drawn From Bees |
![]() |
The career of Brisbane art-rockers Drawn from Bees is a measured exercise in the art of contrast and contradiction. Formed in early 2008, the band’s brief career has been consistently defined by an ongoing negotiation between breathtaking ambition and unpretentious humility.
The band’s four members (vocalist/guitarist Dan James, bassist/vocalist Stew Riddle, guitarist/vocalist Raven Jones and drummer/vocalist Matt Wedmaier) came together over a mutual distaste for the direction of their then-current outfit, veteran prog-rockers Glasshouse. The group opted to independently write, record and release four records within two years on their own record label Bonefinger Records – releasing The Boy and the Ocean EP in September 2008, mini-album And The Blind Shall Lead the Way in March 2009 and The Sky is Falling EP in October 2009 – with debut album Fear Not the Footsteps of the Departed due for release in May 2010.
While presenting some of the most multi-faceted pop music Brisbane has ever produced, Drawn from Bees have been embraced by tastemakers like Richard Kingsmill, had their releases endorsed by respected publications (Rave and Time Off Magazine), performed at mainstream festivals (V Fest and Sounds of Spring), as well as enjoying a showcase at the recent Big Sound conference.
Fear Not the Footsteps of the Departed finds Drawn from Bees stretch the limitations of their defining contradiction almost to breaking point. The band’s most multi-layered and complex release thus far, the album juxtaposes Drawn from Bees’ most heartbreakingly beautiful songs with their most intellectual concepts and most experimental soundscapes – sampled choirs and iPhones swirling magnetically around almost spiritual laments of loss and love.

Cloud Control |
![]() |
Cloud Control came together during the warmest winter on record. They were four folk from the Blue Mountains (Australia) - school friends, brother and sister. Inspired by the great melody makers of our time, Cloud Control embrace the alt-folk tradition, with Neil Young-inspired vocals, inventive pop melodies and old-time girl/boy harmonies from an era when pop music was pure and – well – just made you smile.
In 2007 Cloud Control released their critically acclaimed debut EP (4.5 stars, Sydney Morning Herald) and attracted radio airplay nationally while picking up a couple of credible accolades on the way (Triple J's 'Next Crop Artist' and one of Sydney Morning Herald ''Next Big Things').
Two year on and after months of anticipation, Cloud Control’s debut album ‘Bliss Release’ hit stores on the 14th may 2010.
‘Bliss Release’ heralds a surprising and exciting new direction for the band, making it worthy of international recognition. ‘Gold Canary’ was chosen by UK voters as Single Of The Week on BBC6’s Rebel Playlist and influential British music website Drowned In Sound awarded Gold Canary ‘Single of the week’.
The band has also evolved into a triumphant live music beast supporting high profile acts such as Supergrass and Josh Pyke, as well as numerous national tours with the likes of The John Steel Singers, Leader Cheetah and Yves Klein Blue.
Cloud Control will be touring right throughout June with fellow psych pop compatriots Richard In Your Mind joining in on all dates.
’Vintage Books’ and ‘Buffalo Country’ was featured on Indie 1006 (digital audio).

Direct Influence |

With two countries so close it was only a matter of time before NZ and OZ developed a cross-Tasman sound. Now, after a year in the lab, Direct Influence deliver just that on their long awaited first studio album, War in My Kitchen!
Direct Influence have been bringing their unique sound to audiences across Australia for the last 4 years, breaking through with their first official EP, Herbal Ninja in 2006,
followed by the Better Day EP in 2008. Front-men Dylan Smith and Marcus Ross have been writing and performing together since their high school days in Bunyip in regional Victoria almost a decade ago. Since then, the pair has grown into one
of Melbourne’s fore-front acts.
With a backlog of ground-breaking tunes to record, Direct Influence embarked on their debut album, drawing from a network of talented producers, collaborative artists and brilliant guests. Featuring collaborations with UK emcee EQ on first single ‘Final Word’, and the potent vocals of Dan Sultan on their powerful new single ‘For My People’, the album’s mix of love, fun and empowerment is sure to strike a chord with chart-gazers to reggae rude boys to club “stompers” and indie kids alike.

The Snowdroppers April 2010 |
![]() |
The Snowdroppers came together in the third quarter of 2007 with one thing in common: the desire to introduce the blues to a new generation of fans. Realising they were in fact four clean-limbed “honkeys”, they decided to mix things up a little, which seemed to work in their favour, as their first ever show drew 1300 paying audience members. Of the 1300, only half asked for their money back - thanks in part, to their ribald songs about fornication and intoxication, and by drawing inspiration from the old blues and country masters of the American south.
Consisting of four members (Johnny Wishbone on banjo/vocals, Pauly K on guitar, London on bass and Cougar Jones on drums), The Snowdroppers hit the scene armed with their “Bottom of the Trough” EP, comprised of original work and reworking of 1920’s blues classics (the ones out of copyright).
After releasing their debut album just 4 months ago, the Sydney four-piece have been confirmed to perform at the 21st Annual Byron Bay Bluesfest. They have also been selected to support US band The Avett Brothers on their tour of the east coast. On the back of this tour The Snowdroppers will head out on an extensive run of headline dates along the East Coast playing from Geelong to Toowoomba on the Do The Stomp Tour throughout April, May and June.

Deep Sea |
![]() |
Sydney’s Deep Sea Arcade’s reverberated pop recalls The Kinks at their psychedelic peak, yet with a character and charm that is undeniably unique.
The group began as a song writing and home recording project for founding members and school mates Nic McKenzie and Nick Weaver when they were in their mid teens. After years developing a large catalogue of demo recordings, McKenzie and Weaver banded with guitarists Tim Chamberlain and Simon Relf and drummer Carlos Adura, giving the music an energy and scope that was previously out of reach.
The Triple J and supported single, ‘Crouch End’, gained enthusiastic interest from fans and critics in 2008, and their latest single - ‘Lonely In Your Arms’ - recently featured as the Itunes “Single Of The Week”.
Live, the Sydney five-piece is a force and continues to build a loyal following. As winners of the Hopetoun’s 2008 Homebake/EMI incentive and with appearances at Peat’s Ridge Festival and Playground Weekender, Deep Sea Arcade have also played shows with Aussie acts such as Bluejuice, Expatriate, Yves Klein Blue, Holly Throsby, Jack Ladder and Philadelphia Grand Jury.
Ethereal guitars and lyrical quirks will transport the listener to a dark, watery world of mystery and enchantment, and leave their heads swimming with unforgettable melodies.
"It’s a place of mystery and enchantment, a soundtrack to exploration. The more you become exposed to it, the harder it is to pull yourself away."

The Jefferson |
![]() |
Sydney-based indie rockers The Jefferson have stormed onto the scene and hit the ground, quite literally, ‘Running’ with their debut album.
The Jefferson are a four piece melodic rock band based in Sydney, Australia and while Jared King (bass), Dion O’Connor (drums) and Andrew Turner (guitar) are the grit and guts that drive the resonance and unison, it’s the unique caliber and honesty of singer/ songwriter Geoff Rana’s voice that makes them truly stand out.
Their debut single, ‘Running’ reached Number 3 in the pop charts on OurStage.com in March (2009), won the mysongcast.com.au Facebook campaign and also caught the eye – and ears – of US DJ Mike Cameo who featured the track throughout May on his Cincinnati, Ohio show, Indies’ Top 10. The first single has also received huge coverage on New Zealand biggest FM station ‘The Rock’.
Playing live gigs around Sydney and further developing their sound, The Jefferson’s breakthrough came when they caught the attention of renowned Australian ARIA-Award winning producer/ engineer, Craig Porteils (Cher, Terence Trent D’Arby, Billy Idol, Guns n Roses) and with Craig at the helm, The Jefferson went into the studio in June 2009 to record their EP.
Their debut album - to be released early 2010 - is a sweet prelude of things to come, with 13 tightly-crafted tracks showcasing the four-piece’s signature original sound.
“Big hooks, great production and a huge sound. The songs are destined for radio stations around the country. A band with loads of potential!"

Phatchance |
![]() |
Phatchance is in motion and ready to make a lasting impression on the Australian hip hop scene. Phatchance, an independent hip hop artist from Sydney, creates a unique brand of hip hop utilising emotive and melancholy textures distinct from that of his contemporaries. He is widely regarded as one of the most progressive and entertaining new hip hop artists in the country.
Phatchance has already established a recognisable name amongst artists and fans of Australian hip hop on the back of multiple years of a non-stop and highly praised touring schedule, supporting the likes of De La Soul, Bliss N Eso, The Herd, The Potbelleez, and Phrase to name a few. From executively producing a score of releases and gaining a coveted Feature Artist spot on Triple J, Phatchance has laid the foundations for what promises to be a fantastically received debut, ‘Inkstains’.
Phatchance’s debut album, ‘Inkstains’, demonstrates the culmination of two years of dedicated independent work. The album is a cohesive, emotive and extremely personal album packed full of production from some of the best beatsmiths in the country. Sonically ‘Inkstains’ is a mash of hip hop drums, live instrumentation, acoustic and electronic influences. It moves away from the traditional boom-bap sound of Australian hip hop and has moments of eclectic layering more reminiscent of popular international indie bands.
‘Inkstains’ is arguably the most personally revealing release to emerge from the genre and fills a niche that has been missing from Australian hip hop for some time. The first single ‘Inkstains’ is already receiving regular national rotation on Triple J, and blogs across the country are raving about what’s to come.
‘Inkstains’ is available now on iTunes and at all good record stores.

Bridezilla December 2009 |
![]() |
Boasting a unique blend of fragile folk, twisted jazz, and wandering pop, Bridezilla display why they are being heralded as one of the most compelling new Australian bands in years. One of the most appealing aspects about Bridezilla is that their sound is entirely their own, it is impossible to place them under a specific genre or style. The subtle vocal delivery, the effortless harmonies, string textures, and short stabs of saxophone give the band a wonderfully distinctive sound.
Bridezilla first started to provoke excitement within the music scene over three years ago as a group of highly talented school kids with a mastery of their instruments and stage present that was already compelling. Now slightly older, though still very young, and with a recent tour of America under their belts Bridezilla offer up their debut album ‘The First Dance’.
Recorded in a barn by the Colo River the process saw the band face off against bats, rats, flies, lice, and African thorn bush. The delights of the country however came in the form of bird songs, trampolines, and burnt marshmallows. Living in such close quarters, isolated from society, suffering from numerous trivial trials and tribulations Bridezilla have created something they are truly proud of. ‘The First Dance’ is an album of intelligence, depth and genuine beauty.
‘The First Dance’ has been honoured with Album of the Week status on community radio stations across the country, including Sydney’s FBI and Melbourne’s 3RRR. Drum Media crowned the album their CD of the Week, Sydney Morning Herald hailed the album for its “mesmeric, circular patterns”, which work as “a web that snares intentions and momentum”, while Rolling Stone praised the album as “a near-flawless display of virtuosity”, “sublimely confident debut in a class of its own”.
‘The First Dance’ is available now at all good record stores.
Bridezilla’s Upcoming Shows:
8th January 2010: Enmore Theatre, Sydney (w/ The Temper Trap)
19th January 2010: Metro Theatre, Sydney (w/ The Decemberists)
20th January 2010: Beck’s Festival Bar, Sydney (w/ The Decemberists)

The Melodics November 2009 |
![]() |
It was during a self-imposed isolation in desolate country Victoria that five creatively charged musicians found themselves connecting within a realm of experimentation. They stumbled across something special; a driving punk-like shuffle with a rocking bass line and hard skanking synths. One of the band’s vocalists started rapping over the groove about outer space and the desire to re-unite with his half brother Chewbacca… This was part of the process of writing their debut album, ‘4d’.
Producing colourful music for a grey world, The Melodics have painted a fluorescent foundation across Australia. The Melodics have forged a unique style by taking inspiration from Ska, Punk, New Wave, and Post-Punk of the 70’s and 80’s. Mixing these influences with a love for modern Electro and Hip-Hop has resulted in an electric debut album, ‘4d’, full of bright drive and attitude, sharp quirky vocals and a lush production featuring strings, horns, synths, mandolin, recorders, and other obscure instrumentation.
The Rubik’s Cube city on the cover of ‘4d’ represents The Melodics balance of banging complex moments and slow n’ simple sounds, a visual representation of the multi coloured debut offering. “We wanted to make a partially conceptual album …to have an album with a particular spectrum to it. We feel it’s a very colourful record, whilst all fitting within the same palette.”
Receiving radio play from a wide range of community radio and national play on Triple J, and taking first, second and third place in the Triple J Unearthed Hip-Hop chart with single ‘Cash.Sex.Cool’, ‘Maple Leaf Rag’ and ‘Take Me Away’, it’s clear that The Melodics have something special at hand.
‘4d’ is available now at all good record stores.
The Melodics Upcoming Shows:
5-Dec: Stereosonic Festival, Melbourne
30-Dec: Pyramid Rock Festival, Phillip Island
‘Take Me Away’ was featured on Indie 0911 (digital only). ‘Pop Culture’ was featured on Urban 0911.
