Launching Pad

Each month, SBA Music features an up & coming Australian artist or act.  It's our way of showing our support for local talent, and to inform our network and friends about great home grown music.

This months feature artist: Drawn From Bees

July 2010

The career of Brisbane art-rockers Drawn from Bees is a measured exercise in the art of contrast and contradiction. Formed in early 2008, the band’s brief career has been consistently defined by an ongoing negotiation between breathtaking ambition and unpretentious humility.

The band’s four members (vocalist/guitarist Dan James, bassist/vocalist Stew Riddle, guitarist/vocalist Raven Jones and drummer/vocalist Matt Wedmaier) came together over a mutual distaste for the direction of their then-current outfit, veteran prog-rockers Glasshouse. The group opted to independently write, record and release four records within two years on their own record label Bonefinger Records – releasing The Boy and the Ocean EP in September 2008, mini-album And The Blind Shall Lead the Way in March 2009 and The Sky is Falling EP in October 2009 – with debut album Fear Not the Footsteps of the Departed due for release in May 2010.

While presenting some of the most multi-faceted pop music Brisbane has ever produced, Drawn from Bees have been embraced by tastemakers like Richard Kingsmill, had their releases endorsed by respected publications (Rave and Time Off Magazine), performed at mainstream festivals (V Fest and Sounds of Spring), as well as enjoying a showcase at the recent Big Sound conference.

Fear Not the Footsteps of the Departed finds Drawn from Bees stretch the limitations of their defining contradiction almost to breaking point. The band’s most multi-layered and complex release thus far, the album juxtaposes Drawn from Bees’ most heartbreakingly beautiful songs with their most intellectual concepts and most experimental soundscapes – sampled choirs and iPhones swirling magnetically around almost spiritual laments of loss and love.

’Run Away’ and ’Stand Against The Storm’ will be featured on Indie 1007 (digital audio).
’The East Wood Fox’ and ‘Lights On’ will be featured on Easy Rock 1007 (digital audio).
