SBA Music attended the Hearts for Arts: Music & Law event at the Giant Dwarf theatre in Redfern earlier this month. The event was hosted by the Arts Law Centre of Australia who pride themselves on empowering artists and creative communities through law.

The talk was presented as a panel with some of the best legal minds in Australian Arts law taking the velvet seat; Jules Munro (Simpsons Solicitors), Chloe Martin-Nicolle (Sony Music Australia), Duncan Collins (Ministry of Sound Australia) and Suzanne Derry (Arts Law), who skillfully guided the conversation.

A number of interesting topics were covered including, the inner workings of a label and the music business, the difference between major and indie labels and the key principles of music licensing and copyright. One thing that stood out was that the music industry has a fast changing landscape driven by technological advancement and in order to make it in the business, one needs to be dynamic and adaptable in order to keep relevant.
