SBA Music attended the Hearts for Arts: Music & Law event at the Giant Dwarf theatre in Redfern earlier this month. The event was hosted by the Arts Law Centre of Australia who pride themselves on empowering artists and creative communities through law.

The talk was presented as a panel with some of the best legal minds in Australian Arts law taking the velvet seat; Jules Munro (Simpsons Solicitors), Chloe Martin-Nicolle (Sony Music Australia), Duncan Collins (Ministry of Sound Australia) and Suzanne Derry (Arts Law), who skillfully guided the conversation.

A number of interesting topics were covered including, the inner workings of a label and the music business, the difference between major and indie labels and the key principles of music licensing and copyright. One thing that stood out was that the music industry has a fast changing landscape driven by technological advancement and in order to make it in the business, one needs to be dynamic and adaptable in order to keep relevant.

Perfecting Your In-Store Music Experience Part 1 of 5

Once you have selected music to compliment and support your brand identity, you need to create the right atmosphere in-store by balancing other elements that surround the music. E-commerce is a fierce competitor for brick and mortar stores, so setting a welcoming and attractive atmosphere for your target demographic is essential to getting them in-store and sticking around.

Volume is the most obvious, but frequently overlooked, method of controlling your background music. If the music is too soft, it could lead to customers feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable. Adjusting the volume through out the day will also help to accommodate a suitable energy level for the time of day. For example, the music can be a little softer in the morning, then you can boost it for a a busier lunch time. Remember to turn the volume back down again once foot traffic has slowed down or tables are emptied. If the music is too loud it could have a disorienting affect on a customer. Also, consider the genre of music playing over your sound system; lively dance music would not require as much of a volume lift as an acoustic guitar track would.

3 Rules Of In-Store Background Music

1. Music is as important as the store decor and service.

With an unfathomable amount of online stores these days, consumers are well acquainted with the variety of products on offer before even seeing it physically on the store shelf. For this reason, in-store atmospherics (especially music) need careful consideration to provide customers with an engaging sensory experience.

2. Define your brand

Avoid selecting a music combination that is 'good for everybody' but 'loved by nobody'. Consider exactly who you target demographic is, how you would like to stand out in your market and what you want to achieve in store e.g. is it high turnover of purchases? Do you want to create a relaxed atmosphere to support extended customer dwell time? Being more discerning with music means that you will make a stronger connection with your customers.

3. Speak to the experts

SBA Music's team of specialists can help you to achieve your music branding goals.
